The Churches
In Bologna, churches are part of the everyday landscape: San Petronio, overlooking Piazza Maggiore, is striking for its unfinished façade and for Cassini’s meridian line, the longest in the world traced on a floor. Not far away, the Santo Stefano complex — the famous “Seven Churches” — tells the story of centuries of layered history, while San Domenico houses the saint’s Ark, partly sculpted by a very young Michelangelo. On the hill above the city, the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca is reached through almost four kilometres of portico, with its 666 arches: the longest in the world and a symbol of Bologna itself.
